    Former chief minister Omar Abdullah said on Saturday that the recent killings in Sopore town by unknown gunmen have started after defence minister Manohar Parrikar said that "terrorists should be used to eliminate terrorists".
     "It is only because of the PDP that Ikhwan culture is being revived in the state and  defence minister's statement is an example of that …and now killings have started in Sopore," Omar told an anti-government rally of his party workers.

    Slain Sopore youth laid to rest amidst freedom slogans
    DIG says same group involved in all recent killings in Sopore

    Khursheed Ahmad Bhat, the Sopore youth who was shot dead by unknown gunmen late Friday evening was laid to rest on Saturday morning in the Shaheed graveyard in Bomai village of Sopore.
    Thousands of people from neighbouring villages, relatives and friends of the family and some local Hurriyat leaders participated in the funeral prayers. Reports said people were shouting anti-India and pro freedom slogans as Khursheed was being buried. Local Hurriyat leaders Abdul Gani Bhat and Ghulam Nabi Bhat also spoke on the occasion and called the killing 'state terrorism of Indian agencies'.

    HC seeks fortnightly report on removal of encroachments from Jhelum

    The J&K High Court has directed authorities to file fortnightly status reports about the removal of encroachments from water bodies including the river Jhelum. Hearing a Public Interest Litigation, a division bench of Justices Muzaffar Hussain Attar and Ali Mohammad Magrey also asked the government to inform it how the water bodies are being protected after the removal of encroachments.

The decision was taken during a joint meeting of the Hurriyat executive council, general council, and working committee members which was convened by Hurriyat (M) Chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq at Mirwaiz Manzil.
    "The meeting observed that Agha Sahab was a respected and important member of the organisation who, for  more than two decades, was an active and vocal member of its decision-making body, the executive council, where his opinions were always respected and heeded to," the Hurriyat spokesman said.

    AIIMS coordination committee hunger strike enters 2nd day
    Jammu: A chain hunger strike launched by the coordination committee of various civil groups demanding setting up of AIIMS in Jammu region entered the second consecutive day Saturday.

    Protests in Baramulla against PDD

    BARAMULLA: Scores of people from Sheeri and its neighbouring villages   held a protest on Saturday against the Power Development Department (PDD) for its failure to repair the power transformer of the area.
    The protesters including women and children took to streets early in the morning and blocked the Srinagar-Muzafarabad road.

    Preserving Padshahi canal
    Why shouldn't you deposit Rs 25 lakh each for dereliction of duty?: HC to engineers

    The J&K High Court has issued notices to engineers who were responsible for maintaining and preserving the Padshahi canal from 1990, asking them to explain why they should not deposit Rs 25 lakh each for dereliction of duty.
    Padshahi canal is an age-old irrigation passage which starts from nallah Sindh near Wayil bridge in Ganderbal district.  In the past two decades, it has shrunk from 27ft to a mere 3-5ft in width.
    "We are prima facie satisfied that there has been absolute dereliction of duty and connivance of the concerned engineers with the encroachers, which has resulted in near-extinction of the Padshahi canal," a division bench of Justices Muzaffar Hussain Attar and Ali Mohammad Magrey observed,

    Kashmir in 2015: Army

    Srinagar: As many as 29 militants have been killed in counter-infiltration and anti-militancy operations in Kashmir this year so far.

    "A total of 29 terrorists were eliminated in operations along the Line of Control and in the hinterland," a defence spokesman said after a high-level security review meeting held at Army's Badamibagh Headquarters here.

    Srinagar: Police on Saturday claimed to have arrested a suspected Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) militant, who was planning to carry out attacks on police personnel in Shopian.

    "Shopian police and Army apprehended a newly recruited LeT militant involved in incidents of attack and weapon snatching in South Kashmir," a police spokesman said.

    MLA Pampore sanctions Rs 5L for hospital

    PAMPORE: Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA), Pampore, Mir Zahoor Ahmad on Saturday sanctioned an amount of Rs five lakh for a digital X-Ray machine for sub district hospital of the area.
